Area measurement determines the amount of two-dimensional space enclosed by a shape. Our area calculator supports four common shapes: squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles. Each shape has its own formula and practical applications.
Formula: A = s² (where s = side length)
A square has four equal sides. To calculate square area, multiply the side length by itself. For example, a square with 10-foot sides has an area of 10 × 10 = 100 square feet. Squares are common in tile patterns, floor tiles, and property boundaries.
Formula: A = l × w (length × width)
Rectangles are the most common shape for rooms, properties, and land parcels. To calculate square footage of a room, measure the length and width in feet and multiply them together. A room measuring 20 feet by 15 feet has an area of 300 square feet.
Formula: A = πr² (where r = radius)
Circles are found in gardens, pools, and roundabouts. Use pi (3.14159) times the radius squared to calculate area. A circular patio with a 10-foot radius has an area of approximately 314.16 square feet.
Formula: A = (b × h) ÷ 2 (base × height ÷ 2)
Triangles appear in roof sections, gables, and land plots. Multiply the base by the height and divide by two. A triangular garden bed with a 12-foot base and 8-foot height has an area of 48 square feet.
